Getting Started & FAQs

  • IT Architectural alignment is an important principal for making key IT decisions for BYU and CES. While we are all trying to make the best possible decisions for our customers, the size of our IT enterprise, the complexity of custom software development, maintenance of large legacy platforms, and the overwhelming technology options available on the market often make our IT decisions difficult. To help with this, we have automated portions of our IT architectural review process to help speed up decision making, ensure architectural alignment and allow your teams to deliver quickly. While we are making efforts to streamline this process, these architectural assessments are required.

  • If you have completed the scorecard before and understand the questions, you can expect this scorecard to take 15-20 minutes to complete and should be self-service.

If you are filling out this scorecard for the first time or working with a CES architect, you can expect this scorecard to take 45-60 minutes to complete. If this is your first time, it is recommended that a CES architect assist you in filling this out.

  • Scoring is based on our six architecture principles and eight architectural layers.

For each of the principles and layers, a question will be asked. You will be required to score the architecture based on a series of statements. Scoring is based on a 0 to 5 scale. For new projects and investments, a score of 3 or higher should be targeted. While it is expected there will be some exceptions to this, it is expected that those exceptions are documented as part of this process. You will be asked to provide brief statements in the survey about the scores you have selected.

    Scorecard Scale

It's important to keep in mind that scores below 3 in any principle or layer does not mean that the project will be rejected or determined to be in trouble. The scoring is intended to help understand how far from the target the project may be and also provides feedback to management and engineering teams on defects, complications or areas of improvements identified.
